18 RV SAFETY HACKS

Obviously there are many items you can carry with you on your RV to help with your safety. Here is a partial list of safety items that we keep on our RV. You can get most of these items at our Amazon store: amazon.com/shop/wattsonwheels

1. BLEED STOP KIT – you never know when you might have a bad accident and you need to stop the bleeding. We used this kit on Dave’s ear when he accidentally cut the top of his ear while shaving his head in the shower. It looked like a murder was going on as it was pulsating blood all over the shower walls. The Bleed Stop powder

stopped it right away.

2. TICK KITThis kit includes stainless steel tick remover for safely removing larger embedded ticks, and a specially shaped super-fine-tip tweezer for removing nymphs and small deer ticks, in a leatherette pouch. It comes with a card to help identify the type of tick it is. We suggest you put the critter in a small plastic bag and date it in case you have a reaction to the tick and take it to the doctor with you. Probably would be good for your four-legged fur kids too.

3. BIOFREEZE – This spray or roll-on is fast acting and has a cooling menthol formula which helps with pain relief caused by minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains. My podiatrist introduced me to it when I was suffering from Achilles tendonitis. It did help, but what really surprised me was if I sprayed it on bug bites several times before scratching, it relieved the itch.

4. CLOVE OIL – This small bottle with a very strong clove odor can save you from a lot of pain. Add a few drops on a Q-tip and rub the gums around a tooth that is aching. It can also be used for body massage, hair care and aromatherapy. But we have used it for toothaches and it works to help reduce the pain until a doctor can be seen.

5. ICE/HEAT PACK – Our favorite kind is the gel type that can be used for hot or cold therapy. I used it a lot for my knee after surgery and Dave has used it for back pain, shoulder pain and sprained ankle.

6. WEATHER RADIO – I’m sure you already know what this is. It is a public-alert monitor that receives 7 NOAA channels for flood, tornado, thunderstorm, and other warnings. We used ours once when a tornado was approaching and other times for severe thunderstorm warnings.

7. HAND CRANK RADIO – We have this to hear local news and also weather alerts. It can be charged by a hand crank, solar panel on the radio and USB cable. It can also charge your phone. It’s water-resistant and the 3 LED flashlight comes in handy too. It’s also very small…about the size of a cell phone.

8. SHAKE FLASHLIGHT – This flashlight is great for emergencies and never needs to have the batteries changed or plugged in. You just shake it back and forth and you have light. We have one that is many years old, and it still works in an emergency.

9. CRUTCH – This may sound like a strange item to have available, but you just never know what could happen. They fold in half and flat and fit easily under the bed. If you sprain an ankle or have a need for one due to a bad knee or hurt foot, it can come in very handy. Before I had my knee surgery, I had a few weeks where I needed a crutch to get around.

10. FLARE GUN – Ok, you might need this just in case you are in the middle of nowhere and need help, but we actually have one as personal protection. Many people don’t like guns or don’t want to carry a gun. My father kept a flare gun under his car seat. Why? Because he didn’t want to carry a gun, but he wanted something he could use to shoot someone if they tried to get to him while in his car. May sound silly, but burning magnesium hurts like hell when it’s been shot into your belly. Of course, a firearm is your prerogative.

11. LED ROAD FLARES – These are awesome and we needed to use them one time when we were traveling at night and needed to take our Smart Car down along the side of a dark road. It has 9 different flashing modes for different emergency situations. We only need to charge them via USB twice a year.

12. FIRE PLUGS – We love these to start our campfires and they work if they are wet or if it’s windy. No matches or lighters needed. They are little plugs used with a striker. Check them out in our video: https://youtu.be/Qzw1PzTSLyk

13. ROAD CONES – We have collapsible road cones that we use quite often when we load or unload our Spyders or Smart Car. Many times we cannot help but stick out into a road a little so we put the cones out to give drivers a heads up. We have used them while replacing a flat tire too.

14. ORANGE FLAGS – We keep these on hand in case we need to direct or warn traffic in case we have to back down a road or need people to get over because we are changing a tire on the side of the road.

15. REFLECTIVE VEST – We both have one and have used them more than once when having to change a flat tire. More visible you are the better.

16. ORANGE SHIRT – Dave always wears a fluorescent orange t-shirt when we travel. If he ever has to jump out of the truck to check something or even if just walking across the parking lot at a rest stop or truck stop, he can be easily seen.

17. EMERGENCY ANTI-BIOTICS – Bet you didn't even know you could get emergency anti-biotics. You can, and it's a great thing to have for those emergency infections. Check this video out along with a nurse-friend of ours thoughts and how to purchase. https://youtu.be/ar5sODYk9ac

18. HUNK OF CARPET – Just go to Home Depot and off the rollers you can buy some carpet or get a cheap 5’ x 7’ rug from Walmart or use an old rug that you are going to throw out. Why? You will be surprised how often you pull it out to do repairs. It says your skin and knees from being on concrete or dirt.
